The 10000 steps Myth

The 10k steps daily has been the gold standard for many decades. But why? 

What happens if you walk those 10k steps very slowly? Walking that much can be time consuming for many.

Instead of focusing on step volume, we feel like it would be more compelling to look at cadence (steps/min)

A growing number of research now suggests 100-130 steps/ min for around 30 mins. The aim is to reach moderate aerobic intensity level and is achievable for ostensibly healthy adults.

This guideline seems much more logical than the « recommended » 10000 steps per day, which is based on nothing but an old 1960 commercial done by the japanese to advertise their Manpo-kei (which obviously translates to 10k steps a day). It is incredible that up until this day, health professionals still recommend the 10k program!!

So... for cadence

  • the 100 steps per min is recommended for healthy adults

  • Higher cadence may be required for older adults

Keep in mind that we still recommend 150 mins/week of moderate intensity aerobic activity. But to achieve this, 100-130 steps per min is suggested.
